As storms moved through our area Monday, lightning struck the steeple of a church in Wilton, Iowa.

First Presbyterian Church, 213 West Fifth Street, was reported struck by lightning at around 2 p.m.

Lightning struck the steeple.  Firefighters reported light smoke showing from the building when they arrived.

Pastor Jennifer Jennings was the only person inside the church at the time of the lightning strike.  She got out of the building safely.

"Usually we have an after-school program in the afternoon, so I'm kind of glad that there wasn't any school today so that the kids weren't there," Pastor Jennings told News 8. "I'm still in a little bit of shock, but just glad that everybody's safe."

Firefighters took the cross down from the steeple.

No injuries were reported.
