ROCK ISLAND – Neighbors of Denkmann Elementary are asking for more information after three robberies happened in the area Tuesday, September 11. Two of the robberies happened in broad daylight.
The Rock Island Police Department Incident Report Summary shows that two of the incidents were car burglaries while the third was a home burglary. The home burglary happened near 20th Avenue and 46th Street.
“The police stopped out here and stopped in the back,” Rock Island resident Donna Murphy said. “They talked to me in the back a couple of times yesterday.”
Donna says she was waxing her car Wednesday when police chased a vehicle out of the area. She claims the vehicle was a beige Cadillac she had never seen in the neighborhood before. She claims it headed down the alley in her neighborhood right behind her home.
“Some car just parked here and parked down our alley,” Donna said. “The car took off down the street after the officer was around.”
Donna believes the driver may have tried to break into cars or homes Wednesday. This happened at the 4400 block of 23rd Avenue Wednesday, a day after three burglaries had happened in the area.
“We’ve heard there’s been a lot of break-ins up here,” Donna said. “The police officer told us here too.”
Neighbors say they’re a bit worried with the recent thefts, but they also say police have increased their patrol efforts in the area. That has made some of the neighbors more comfortable.
“If they’re dumb enough to stay, they’ll get caught,” Donna’s husband Jim Murphy said. “I think the police are hanging around here enough. The thief should probably be getting out of the area.”
Rock Island Police would not comment on the issue. There is no suspect information at this time. There’s also no word on whether the three incidents from Tuesday were related to the police chase on Wednesday.
