(CNN) — While vanilla has often beat out chocolate as the most popular milkshake flavor, today – National Chocolate Milkshake Day – is for the cocoa lovers.

As we learned in June on National Vanilla Milkshake Day, the milkshake, as we know it today, was invented by a Walgreen’s employee in Chicago in 1922. He added two scoops of ice cream to a drink called a malted milk. Although the concept of milkshakes had been around since about 1885, it wasn’t until that fateful day that the drink became popularized.

There are a few of ways to make your chocolate milkshake stand out from the crowd. Try using chocolate-coffee ice cream, or even mint chocolate chip ice cream. Both flavors add that extra kick to regular chocolate ice cream. You can also use vanilla ice cream but make your own chocolate syrup to flavor it. For the syrup, mix cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla, a little salt and water and heat in a saucepan until the mixture thickens.
