McDonald’s will start listing calorie information on indoor and drive-thru menus by September 17, 2012.

Reuters reports that under the new U.S. health care law, restaurants with 20 or more locations and other retail food outlets will be required to clearly post calories and other nutrition information on menus.

McDonald’s announced it will make the info available at its approximately 14,000 U.S. locations starting Monday, September 17, 2012.   We found some local McDonald’s restaurants with the new menus in place Wednesday, September 12.  Some Iowa media outlets are reporting the new menu signs are already up at McDonald’s outlets in Ames.

Restaurants are expected to be required to post the calorie and nutrition information by next year.

The New York Post reports the requirement is part of the Obama administration’s health care overhaul, upheld recently by the U.S. Supreme Court.

McDonald’s is also reportedly working on lower-calorie options such as wraps, egg white-only breakfast sandwiches, smoothies and possibly grilled chicken nuggets.
