Flags at half-staff to observe 9/11

By presidential proclamation, Patriot Day is honored with all American flags at half-staff from sunrise to sunset each September 11.

Illinois and Iowa are among states with official orders for all flags to be flown at half staff September 11.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad ordered all flags in the state to be flown at half staff from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2012.  Illinois Governor Pat Quinn ordered all flags in his state flown at half staff from sunrise to sunset.

The observance is in honor of those who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Flags at all public buildings and facilities, including the capitol building and capitol complex, will be at half staff September 11.   The governors’ offices encouraged individuals and organizations to also fly the flag at half-staff as a sign of respect.

September 11 is Patriot Day in the United States.  By presidential proclamation, this national day of mourning is honored with all American flags at half-staff from sunrise to sunset each September 11. 

September 11 is also a National Day of Service and Remembrance according to an act made official by Congress in 2009.  Americans are encourage to sign up for a service opportunity at www.serve.gov.
