Citizens tried to free man from wrecked car

Witnesses calling to report a car swerving on Great River Road saw the car crash before police could get there.

Witnesses calling to report a car swerving on Great River Road saw the car crash before police could get there.

Michael Bewley, 73, was reportedly driving his Ford Focus east (north) along Great River Road when he began to swerve and travel into oncoming traffic.

“As the witnesses were calling SECC to report Bewley, he lost control of the vehicle,” said a spokesperson for the Scott County, Iowa Sheriff’s Department.

When he lost control, Bewley’s car went off the right side of the road, struck a tree, spun and overturned.  The car came to rest upside down.

Police said several citizens pushed the overturned vehicle onto its wheels as they tried, unsuccessfully, to free Bewley from the wrecked car.

Firefighters extricated Bewley from the car.  Police said Bewley was wearing his seat belt.

Bewley suffered serious injuries and was taken by helicopter ambulance to an area hospital.  He was last reported in intensive care.

Police later said Bewley had a medical condition which caused him to crash and that no citations would be issued.
