After months of discussions about building a 1.4 billion dollar fertilizer plant in Scott County, Orascom has decided to build in Lee County.
The Egypt-based company is being offered $100 million dollars in state tax credits to build at a site in Lee County. Lee County is in southeast Iowa including Fort Madison. The Iowa Economic Development Authority Board will be voting on the tax incentives in the immediate future.
The fertilizer plant was looking to build on over 300 acres of land in Scott County between Walcott and Davenport but met a lot of resistance from the land owners. They claim the plant would have been placed on prime soil.
The decision to return the project to Lee County was made last week. The site has not been announced.
