Car vs train wreck in Boone Iowa

One person is dead after an accident between a car and train Monday night, September 3, 2012.

It happened just after 8 p.m. on the train tracks near Old Highway 30 and Highway 17 in Boone.

The accident was called in by a Union Pacific employee who saw the car and tried to radio the conductor to stop.

Troopers say it appears the driver of the vehicle went around the crossing arms and hit the train.   The car was wedged between two train cars and was not directly hit by the engine.

State Trooper Michael Clyde says it’s unlikely the driver didn’t see the crossing arms, “It’s a fully marked intersection with a stop sign before you even get to E-32 here.  So it’s very well marked.”

The name of the victim has not been released, but troopers say the driver was a man.  No one else was in the car.

The Iowa State Patrol plans to talk to the victim’s family and witnesses to see what my have led up to the accident.

They say at this time, it does appear the driver was speeding.
