WILTON, N.H. — He just wanted to get his dying grandmother a bowl of soup. Little did he know his efforts to brighten his grandmother’s day would cheer Facebook users who stumbled across his story — and go viral.

Brandon Cook posted a touching status on his Facebook wall about his quest to find his dying grandmother a bowl of clam chowder. Apparently, the hospital soup was not to her liking. See below. (Warning: mild profanity.)

After posting it to his wall, his mother found it and reposted it to Panera’s wall, albeit slightly edited. It soon went viral. Since posted on August 8, it’s received over 810,000 likes and has been commented on nearly 35,000 times. In addition, Panera’s wall has been inundated with posts from people thanking the company for the actions of one store manager.

According to Nashua Patch, they tracked down the Cooks (no pun intended) and confirmed the story.

“As long as it’s out there, I just wanted to make sure people get the story straight,” Gail Cook said. “It’s no hoax. I think it’s so touching to other people because they are relating to the situation. People need good news. But I also think there’s something about the story, across the generations, that’s touching – a lot of kids my son’s age don’t have that, and a lot of people think kids that age are just punks.”
