A deaf preschooler was reportedly told to stop using the sign for his name because it violates the districts weapons policy.
1101now.com reports three-year-old Hunter Spanjer of Grand Island, Nebraska might have to change the sign for his name even though the sign is one registered with his language, called Signing Exact English.
Grand Island Public Schools has a weapons policy which prohibits “any instrument…that looks like a weapon.” That might include Hunter’s little hands giving the sign for his name.
The sign Hunter uses is modified with crossed fingers to show it is his unique sign for his name.
A spokesperson for the district said they are working with Hunter’s parents to find a solution.
Hunter’s parents say lawyers from the National Association of the Deaf may get involved.
