Driver miraculously survives I-80 crash that destroys his car

A passenger car was destroyed when it veered onto the shoulder of I-80 and struck a parked semi tractor-trailer.

The wreck was reported just before 7 a.m. Monday, August 20, 2012 on westbound Interstate 80 at mile marker 34, one mile east of Annawan, Illinois.

Police said a blue 2007 Pontiac sedan was westbound when it traveled onto the shoulder and the passenger side of the car struck the rear end of a semi parked on the shoulder awaiting service.

The Pontiac tolled across the westbound lanes and came to rest in the median.

The car was split during the crash, with most of the front passenger side destroyed.

Police said the driver, 29-year-old Paul Peterson of Sheffield, Illinois, had only minor injuries.  He was out of the vehicle and walking around when emergency responders arrived at the crash.  Police said he was wearing his seat belt during the crash.

The driver of the semi, 50-year-old Jerome Sangster of Chicago, said he was not hurt.
