Bride & husband attacked at wedding reception

DENVER — A bride and her new husband were viciously attacked on their wedding day in Denver. Now police are looking for the man accused of not only beating the bride, but sicking his roommate’s dog on her.

This attack happened early Sunday morning, Aug. 12.

It should have been the happiest day of their lives. But Brittany Schult and Jorge Cortez-Trinidad’s wedding day was one of the most frightening.

“Why would someone I consider to be my brother, do this to me?” questioned Schult-Cortez, 22.

Close friend Joel Nevarez, 21, got angry at their reception held at a relative’s home. He left and returned with a dog around 12:30 a.m.

“I tried to talk him down, walk him home,” Schult-Cortez said. “He saw my husband jump the fence. He said, ‘Sick her Skylo. Sick her Skylo.’”

The dog knocked  Schult-Cortez to the ground, biting her shoulder and back.

Her husband, who was inside at the time, said he heard screaming and crying outside. When he walked out, he told police he saw “his wife being drug by her hair by our friend’s pit bull.”

“Joel stood there with the leash in his hand, laughing — laughing that the dog was biting me — as he ripped chunks of skin out of my back, ripped chunks out of my arm, hitting me in the face with brass knuckles,” a tearful Schult-Cortez said.

When her new husband tried getting the dog off her, it bit him three times on his thigh.

“I’ve been in so much pain since then,” Schult-Cortez said.

She’s dealing with infected wounds, but also with worry. Nevarez is still on the run. And there’s more. He posted this threat on his Facebook page.

“2 more stops then I hit my death bed…Yup it will be A SICK DEATH BUT I AIN’T GOING ALONE…”

“He has some sort of plan,” Schult-Cortez said. “I don’t know what it involves. I just hope no one else gets hurt like I did or worse.”

Nevarez also sent a Facebook message to Cortez-Trinidad saying the DJ made him mad and that he’s going to Boston to kill himself. Schult-Cortez said Nevarez has a history of mental illness and is easily angered.

Cortez-Trinidad’s brother-in-law also broke his arm during the attack, when he jumped the fence to get the dog off the bride.

Denver Police confirm the dog is not a pit bull, but couldn’t say what breed. Police referred us to the Denver Animal Shelter because it tested the animal. Calls were not returned Thursday night.

Schult-Cortez returned to the hospital Thursday to receive an IV treatment of antibiotics. She’ll have to return again Friday morning for another 2-hour treatment.

Nevarez faces a felony charge of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
