Guilty plea in Moline hit-and-run

The man accused of running down and killing someone in a Moline alley pleaded guilty to a reduced charge.

The man accused of running down and killing someone in a Moline alley pleaded guilty to a reduced charge.

Police had previously testified that Stephen Smith of Rock Island, Illinois ran over and killed 44-year-old Matthew Pohl after a drug deal had gone bad between the two men Wednesday, February 22, 2012.  Pohl was found in an alley in the 2400 block of 16th Street in Moline and he was pronounced dead later at a hospital.

Smith’s arrest was announced the next day.

Smith waived his right to a trial and pleaded guilty August 9 to failure to report a motor vehicle accident involving death or personal injury.  In exchange for his plea, other charges in the case were dismissed and Smith was released from GPS monitoring.

Smith remained free on bond.

Sentencing was set for October 29.  Smith faces up to ten years in prison.
