Police said they were investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a home in Burlington, Iowa.

Police were sent to a home in the 800 block of South Eighth Street at about 2 a.m. Thursday, August 9, 2012.  They were checking the welfare of a person who had been involved in a previous domestic dispute.

Officers forced entry into the home and found the body of 33-year-old Crystal Newman inside.

Police initially reported no one else was in the residence.  On August 10, police said, "The children living at the residence were not harmed but the Department of Human Services was contacted to assist in the investigation to assure the children's safety."

Police said Newman had a gunshot wound, and they found a firearm and ammunition at the scene.  They stopped short of saying whether the gunshot wound caused her death.

An autopsy was being performed at the University of Iowa Hospital.
