Football player collapses and dies on first day of practice

A Hall High School junior football player collapsed and died on the practice field at the start of Wednesday’s afternoon practice session.

Hall Superintendent Mike Struna said Daniel Lule passed out on the field, and 9-1-1 was called. Struna said the medical staff was unable to revive the Hall youth.

Wednesday was the first official day of the 2012 fall sports season. The Red Devils began practice at 7 a.m. and reported back to the practice field at noon. A short time later, Lule collapsed, Struna said.

According to a police report issued at 4 p.m. Wednesday by Spring Valley Police Chief Kevin Sangston, the Spring Valley 10/33 Ambulance was dispatched at about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday to the Hall High School practice field for a 17-year-old male who had collapsed during football practice. The player collapsed during a non-contact agility drill. The player collapsed approximately 20 minutes after the start of practice.

Sangston said the player was taken to St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley, where he died at about 1:37 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation by the Bureau County Coroner’s office, Sangston said
