Powerball jackpot climbs to $212 million

No one won Saturday, sending the jackpot for the Wednesday, August 8, 2012 Powerball drawing to $212 million.

More than 31,000 Illinois residents won prizes ranging from $4 to $10,000 Saturday but the jackpot rolled when no one chose the winning numbers of 19, 30, 48, 53, 55 and the Powerball of 18.

“If you lined up 212 million one-dollar bills, they would stretch a staggering $246,530 miles long.  That’s enough to stretch from Chicago to Tahiti and back roughly 21 times,” said Illinois Lottery spokesperson Chanele Newton.

The cash value of the $212 million jackpot is $142.9 million.  After taxes are withheld the net payout is approximately $100 million.

Overall odds of winning any prize in the Powerball drawing are one in 31.8.

The largest-ever Powerball jackpot was $365 million.  It was one February 18, 2006 in Nebraska.
