East Moline man found guilty of setting ex-girlfriend’s home on fire

A 29-year-old man could face prison after a Scott County, Iowa jury convicted him of arson and burglary.

Michael Mitrisin, of East Moline, Illinois, was accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment at Harrison Manor apartments in Bettendorf, Iowa and setting the woman’s belongings on fire February 5, 2012.   He was formally charged March 22, 2011.

Mitrisin was found guilty Tuesday, July 31, 2012 after a trial that lasted just over a week.  The trial began July 23.

“In addition to property damage, the lives of other occupants and firefighters were put at risk,” said Scott County Attorney Michael Walton.

Walton said Mitrisin faces up to 25 years in prison for the first-degree arson charge and up to ten years in prison for the second-degree burglary charge.  Sentencing was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. September 6, 2012. 

Mitrisin was held in the Scott County Jail.
