The first shovels of dirt were turned to begin construction for a new movie theater complex in Muscatine, Iowa.

Called “The Palms”, the 10-plex will replace the Plaza four-plex theater located in the Muscatine Mall.

The groundbreaking ceremony happened Thursday, July 26, 2012.  Fridley Theatres, which owns the existing and new theaters, hopes to have the new facility open by the end of 2012 or early 2013.

Longer-term visions for The Palms include surrounding restaurants and retail shops.

The Palms is at the corner of U.S. Highway 61 Bypass and Mulberry Avenue in Muscatine.
