First Day Project Helps Quad City Students

Your donations of school supplies will help local kids be ready for their first day of school.

It may not feel like it outside, but it’s back-to-school season.

The Community Foundation of the Great River Bend is asking for the community’s help in getting students ready for school. The First Day Project collects school supplies for students throughout the Quad Cities. Illinois’ collection day is Saturday, July 21st for Coal Valley, Colona, East Moline, Milan, Moline, Rock Island, and Silvis. Iowa’s collection day is Saturday, August 4th for Bettendorf, Blue Grass, Buffalo, Davenport, LeClaire, Moscow, Pleasant Valley, Walcott, and Wilton.

There are several ways you can donate. You can leave a bag of school supplies by your mailbox and your postal carrier will pick it up for you. You can also drop your donation off at WQAD-TV, located at 3003 Park 16th Street in Moline, or any of the following businesses: Chris Elsberg State Farm Insurance Agency, 3700 11th Street, Rock Island; Keim’s Paint Center, 4661 44th Street, Rock Island; Blackhawk Bank and Trust, 38th Street & Blackhawk Road, Rock Island; and Blackhawk Bank and Trust, 301 West 4th Street, Milan. Donations are being accepted until Friday, July 27th.

Both Carpetland USA locations in Moline and Davenport are also accepting donations during the duration of this supply drive.

Quad City area McDonald’s are also holding several “Pack-the-Bus” events. The restaurants located at 1800 36th Avenue in Moline and 727 42nd Avenue in East Moline are collecting supplies until Friday, July 20th. The restaurants located at 852 Middle Road in Bettendorf and 5003 Welcome Way in Davenport are also collecting supplies from July 30th through August 3rd.

WalMart is another place to drop off donations. The store will be holding a “Stuff-the-Bus” event on Saturday, July 28th from 10am-6pm at its location at 1601 18th Street in Silvis, 3930 44th Avenue in Moline, 5811 Elmore Avenue in Davenport, and 3101 West Kimberly in Davenport.

Items needed include: loose-leaf paper, pens, kleenex, washable markers, spiral notebooks, crayons, backpacks, pencil boxes, colored pencils, pencils, scissors, watercolor paints, pocket folders, erasers, glue sticks, dry erase markers, composition notebooks, rulers, and hand sanitizer.

Monetary donations are also being accepted. A donation of $10 will provide all of the needed school supplies for one student. Checks can be made out to the First Day Project c/o the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend, 852 Middle Rd., Suite 100, Bettendorf, IA 52722. If you would like your donation designated for a particular school district, please note that on the check.

Volunteers are needed to help sort school supplies. Please consider volunteering on July 23rd or July 24th anytime between 11am-7pm at the former Intermediate Academy, 2100 6th Avenue, across from the Rock Island-Milan Schools Administration Center.
