A West Burlington, Iowa man was jailed after he allegedly fired a gun at women inside and outside an occupied house.

Michael Kartel, 54, reportedly went to a home in the 6200 block of 108th Avenue just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012.

Witnesses said  Kartel was looking for another man who owed him money.  When he was told the man wasn’t home,  Kartel pulled a handgun from a holster on his hip.

A woman inside the home said Kartel pointed the gun at her head.  She said she pushed the gun away and left the room, hearing a gunshot moments later.

Kartel was still armed with the gun and a large knife when he reportedly went outside and confronted two people there. Kartel allegedly fired the gun in the direction of one of the people outside.

When he was told police had been called, Kartel reportedly left in a car.

Police said they found Kartel at his home on East Pennington Street.  They arrested him there and seized a nine-inch fixed-blade knife, a .22 revolver, ammunition and a holster.

Police said Kartel told them he was searching for a man who had stolen $120 from him the day before.  Kartel admitted to taking the gun and knife to the home, and he said a round he fired from the gun into a couch was an accident.

Kartel is charged with two counts of going armed with intent and three counts of aggravated assault.  He was held in the Des Moines County Jail.
