UPDATED: Industrial accident kills Alcoa worker

More information was released two days after a worker died following an accident at Alcoa’s Davenport Works.

A man working at Alcoa’s Davenport Works died about an hour after an accident at the plant Monday, July 16, 2012.

It happened just before 8 p.m.

A spokesperson for Alcoa said Robert Leech, 45, was airlifted to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m.

Leech, who is from Wheatland, Iowa, leaves behind a wife and five children.   A friend said Leech had worked for Alcoa for about six months before his death.

Alcoa’s internal investigation into the incident is ongoing. 

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was also notified, and they are also conducting an investigation into the incident.  A representative from OSHA in Des Moines said it could take up to six months for their investigation to be completed.

Visitation for Robert Leech was set for Thursday, July 19, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Chapman Funeral Home in Wheatland, Iowa.  His funeral was scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m.
