Iowa City is hoping a new car sharing program relieves congestion.
The city council voted to approve a contract with “Zip Car” Tuesday night. Ten fuel-efficient cars will soon be moving through the city.
People can “borrow” the cars for around $8 per hour. That includes gas, insurance and maintenance.
City leaders hope the program will reduce the number of cars on the University of Iowa campus and in the downtown areas.
Experts estimate for every car in the program, 20 cars are taken off the road.
The program could be in place as soon as September.
