The University of Iowa reportedly made hundreds of payroll overpayments and now they’re working to recover that money.

For the second year in a row, a state audit found the university overpaid employees.  In the 2010-2011 year, overpayments increased by $73,441 over the previous year to $645,741.

The Iowa Higher Education website reported 93 percent of those overpayments had been collected as of June 12.  The remainder was in the process of being collected.

University spokesman Tom Moore was quoted saying the problem was primarly one involving timely processing of paperwork, and that the university has taken steps to resolve the overpayment issue.

The overpayments generally happen when changes in employment status are not reported to human resources by the worker’s department in a timely manner.

Overpayments were reportedly reduced by 20 percent at UI for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
