Several media outlets are reporting legendary television and film actor Andy Griffith died Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the age of 86.
Emergency medical crews reportedly responded to Griffith’s home Tuesday morning in Roanoke Island, North Carolina.
Griffith is perhaps best known for his starring role in The Andy Griffith Show, in which he played Sheriff Andy Taylor in the 1960s. His acting career began in the 50s with a role in the television show No Time for Sergeants and in the 1957 movie “A Face in the Crowd.”
Griffith also starred in several other television series including the legal drama “Matlock.
In addition to acting, Griffith was a musician and held a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Numerous sources cite his mother as the guiding force behind his love of music.
