Arson fire forces evacuation of care facility

An early-morning fire forced residents to evacuate Cottonwood Care Facility in Burlington, Iowa just before 4 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012.

The fire reportedly started in a chair in the transitional apartments building.  The fire activated the building’s sprinkler system.

Investigators later determined the fire was intentionally set. 

The fire was out when firefighters arrived. All of the residents evacuated without injury.  They were eventually allowed to return to their apartments.

Damage was estimated at $5,000 to the building plus $1,500 to the contents.
