Smoke damage from an electrical fire forced the closure of Currens Hall at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois.

The fire was confined to a mechanical maintenance area in the basement of the building.

Currens Hall houses classrooms dedicated to sciences such as chemistry and physics as well as the university’s physical science library.

Chemicals in the building are secure and ventilation in the building was working, but the air conditioning was inoperable after the fire.

Classes normally held in Currens were relocated to Morgan Hall until further notice.

University employees who work in Currens Hall were given the option to use accrued time off or to contact the university for alternate work locations.
