Police say thieves used a vehicle to smash through the front of a Shell Express to get at the ATM inside the store.

Police responded to a burglary alarm at the Annawan Shell Express, 306 N. Canal Street, just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2012.

When they arrived, they found the front doors of the store smashed in and the ATM missing.

Police said it appeared someone used a recreational vehicle to smash through the doors and to drag the ATM out of the store.

Several similar thefts have been reported in our area in recent weeks.

Police said thieves used a stolen John Deere utility vehicle to drive through the rear entrance to Northland Mall, 2900 East Lincoln Way in Sterling, Illinois.  The suspects allegedly used the utility vehicle to take the ATM out through those same rear doors.  A hiker found the vehicle in the Hennepin Canal on June 7.  The ATM had not been found.

That same day, suspects reportedly stole the ATM from a restaurant in the 3500 block of Lincoln Way.  The ATM, minus the safe inside, was found in a retention pond behind a business east of the restaurant.

An ATM was taken from Great River Mart on Illinois 84 in Cordova on June 15, 2012.  Rock Island County Sheriff Jeff Boyd said it appeared thieves also tried unsuccessfully to take the ATM from the Hill and Dell 66 across the street.
