Nearly four years after a plan was put in place, the Diocese of Davenport bankruptcy case is closed.
A spokesman for the diocese reported the closure of the case June 21, 2012.
The diocese filed for bankruptcy after negotiating a $37 million settlement with survivors of sexual abuse by priests in the diocese. The settlement was negotiated November 28, 2007. Of the $37 million settlement, $19.5 million was committed from Travelers Insurance Company and $17.5 million from the Diocese of Davenport.
“The bankruptcy process provided the best opportunity for healing and for the just and fair compensation of those who have suffered sexual abuse by priests in our Diocese. The settlement also provided the best way to continue the Church’s mission in the Diocese of Davenport. While the bankruptcy process has closed, it will not end the suffering by some survivors of abuse. I pray that the healing process for the survivors of abuse will continue,” said Most Rev. Martin Amos, Bishop of Davenport.
