River Drive Fluid Spill 6-19-12 – WQAD

The spill of an unknown fluid caused hazmat crews to restrict traffic in the area of West River Drive and I-280 in western Davenport Tuesday, June 19, 2012.

The spill was reported just before 2 p.m.

Initial reports indicated it might be diesel fuel spilled, but crews on the scene said the substance resembled vegetable oil.  Because of the unknown type of fluid and unknown source of the spill, hazardous materials crews were called to work the cleanup.

One eastbound lane of West River Drive was blocked for a stretch of several blocks from the Casey’s General Store to Interstate 280.  Although the spill was also on the entrance ramp to westbound I-280 and on the interstate, traffic was able to safely pass as cleanup crews worked the area.

Crews used a quick-dry substance to soak up the spill and a street sweeper to remove that material.
