A Princeton, Illinois teen who pleaded guilty to taking a loaded shotgun into a school was sentenced to four years in prison.
Blake Schmidt, 18, pleaded guilty in April 2012 to unlawful use of a weapon.
Students and staff were evacuated from Princeton High School when Schmidt allegedly took a loaded shotgun into the building November 16, 2011. The gun was not pointed at anyone.
It took negotiators about an hour to convince Schmidt to surrender.
The Bureau County Republican reported at sentencing, Schmidt told the judge he had not taken his prescription medication on the day of the incident and that he did not know why he decided to go to the school with a loaded gun.
At his June 13 sentencing hearing, the judge found Schmidt eligible for the boot camp-style Impact Incarceration Program operated through the Illinois Department of Corrections. If Schmidt completes the four- to six-month program, his prison sentence would be considered completely served.
