Two area colleges are among those listed as the top ten sexually-healthy schools in the U.S.

The rankings are in the annual Trojan Sexual Health Report Card, which ranks schools according to student accessibility to sexual health resources and information.

“Colleges and university were judged across 13 separate heal service categories including:  access to anonymous advice, contraceptives and sexual awareness programs,” said the Trojan website.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign jumped from the number 64 spot on the list last year to number two, listed only behind top-ranked Columbia University in the City of New York.  Columbia is the only school in the six-year history of the report card to repeat in the top spot.

The University of Iowa ranked number nine on the list of 141 ranked schools and the University of Wisconsin at Madison ranked number 11.  Northwestern University ranked number 28.

Other area schools that made the list were:  Iowa State at number 81; Northern Illinois University was number 98 (up from number 63 the prior year) and Chicago State University ranked number 138 out of 141.

It’s a repeat for Chicago State at the bottom of the list.

The big jump for Northwestern was attributed the the school’s “extensive peer education programs” that include events and workshops on sexual health.

Schools were graded on :

  1. Student opinion of Health Center
  2. Hours of operation
  3. Allow drop-ins or require appointments for student scheduling
  4. Separate sexual health awareness programs for students (e.g. Sex week, etc)
  5. Contraceptive availability — free or at cost
  6. Condom availability — free or at cost
  7. HIV testing on-site (On/off campus, cost)
  8. STI testing on-site (On/off campus, cost)
  9. Anonymous advice for students available through center (via email, phone, text)
  10. Lecture/outreach programs for sexual health issues
  11. Student peer groups
  12. Availability of sexual assault programs, resources or service
  13. Website usability, functionality
