A website could save you from hackers. A website called "LastPass" can help you decide whether your information has been hacked.
The website's getting publicity after Russian hackers got into 6.5 million different LinkedIn passwords. 1.5 million eHarmony passwords got hacked into as well.
"They don't have to be in the Quad Cities to attack consumers and people in the Quad Cities," John Deere Security Manager John Johnson said of hackers.
"LastPass" makes you set up an account with its system first. Then, the website asks you to enter in one of your passwords to a social media site. Then it tells you whether somebody's hacked into it.
"'LastPass" looks like a legitimate website," Johnson said. "I didn't see anything terribly suspicious about it."
One question being raised is how many people are looking to hack your information. Johnson says you might be surprised.
"There are lots of curious people who are out there playing around," he says. "We might call them 'script kitties'."
'Script kitties' are people who want to hack into your stuff. Johnson's also skeptical of many websites who say they're trying to help you out.
"I'm always suspicious when a company comes in to swoop your problems after a natural disaster," he said of the LinkedIn situation.
Johnson says people need to change their passwords often in order to make sure they don't get hacked. Even if "LastPass" doesn't find anyone who's hacked into your account, it still tells you to change your password.
