Iowa teen killed driving to crash involving another teen

A Wilton, Iowa girl died in a wreck as she was on her way to a separate crash involving a friend.

A Wilton, Iowa girl died in a wreck as she was on her way to a separate crash involving a friend.

Police said 16-year-old Justice Melton of Wilton, Iowa was westbound on 104th Street when she lost control of her vehicle just east of Highway 38 in Wilton.

Melton was ejected from the vehicle.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said it appeared Melton was on her way to another crash on North Isett, south of Highway 6, involving 17-year-old Jennifer Lee Ward of Muscatine, Iowa.

Ward lost control of her vehicle and it had rolled several times before coming to rest in a ditch.

Ward was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Iowa City.

“There is no evidence at this time to suggest that Melton was using her cell phone or texting when that accident occurred,” said a statement from Muscatine County Chief Deputy C.J. Ryan.  “Accident scenes can be very dangerous and civilians should not respond to them.”

Wilton Jr./High School Principal, Ken Crawford says Melton was friends with everyone at the school.

"She was a person who hung out with everybody.  She didn't have bad days, she was always friendly," Crawford says.

This is the second time this year the small town has lost a teenager to a car accident.  In January, 18-year-old Krysten Reddick died when he car collided with an oncoming vehicle.  The school also lost a teacher to cancer during the past school year.
