The National Weather Service office in Davenport, Iowa posted wind speed readings of 20 miles per hour, with gusts of 25 miles per hour, on its website.

Winds in Iowa City were out of the west and northwest at about 14 miles per hour at noon Tuesday.  The fire was expected to continue to burn, churning out thick black smoke, for several days.

Although it is possible residents could see some of the smoke in the air, the contaminants were within acceptable limits according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Shean Fitzsimmons of the DNR said contaminant readings would have to exceed 35.5 parts per million for health concerns to be raised.  At noon Tuesday, readings in Davenport were at .2 ppm.

The DNR uses a combination of air quality maps to read and forecast air quality across Iowa.
