Students hurt when pickup crashes into school bus

Police say 8 students were taken to area hospitals after a 71-year-old man ran a stop sign and crashed into a school bus.

Police say 8 students were taken to area hospitals after a 71-year-old man ran a stop sign and crashed into a school bus. 

The crash was reported just before noon Thursday, May 24, 2012 at the intersection of West Third and Sturdevant streets in Davenport, Iowa.

Police say Ben McDonald of Davenport was northbound on Sturdevant Street when he allegedly ran a stop sign and crashed his pickup truck into an eastbound Illinois Central school bus.

Nineteen students, one teacher and the driver were on the bus.  Eight students were taken to area hospitals.  Police said their injuries did not appear to be serious.

McDonald was also taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. 

Police said they charged McDonald with a stop/yield violation in connection with the crash.
