17th Congressional District Congressman Bobby Schilling has ranked second among all of the first-term representatives in mass mailing and communication spending.  He has spent $300,000 during his term causing his opponent Cheri Bustos to question his choices with tax payers’ dollars.

“For $300,000, how many seniors could be helped?   How many veterans could be helped?  How communities could receive grants for that? And they end up being pieces that end up in the trash,” Bustos says.

Bustos also accuses Schilling of using the mass mailings to launch his re-election campaign.

Schilling’s campaign says, “These aren’t mailings that just advertise our positions on issues, we actually ask for input from the constituents.”

Schilling’s campaign says there is no other way to effectively reach the entire district.
