The Food and Drug Administration says Hy-Vee stores in eight states, including Iowa and Illinois, distributed bagged salads which are now being recalled.
The salads are part of a larger recall of bagged salads produced by River Ranch Fresh Foods, LLC of Salinas, California. The FDA says the salads could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Healthy people suffering from Listeria infection might have short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Pregnant women are also at risk for miscarriage and stillbirths.
The FDA says no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.
The recalled salads also bear brand names of River Ranch, Shurfresh, Sysco, The Farmers Market and Farm Stand. River Ranch salads were distributed nationwide; Hy-Vee and Shurfresh brands were distributed in several states including Iowa and Illinois.
“The recalled retail and foodservice salad bags have either ‘Best By’ code dates between 12MAY2012 – 29MAY2012 or Julian dates of 118 and 125. The code date is typically located in the upper right hand corner of the bags,” according to the FDA.
Customers who have purchased salads on the recall list should return the product to the retailer for a refund.
