More than a dozen fire departments responded to a five-alarm fire that broke out at Riverside Storage near Savanna and Thomson, Illinois.

Firefighters say three storage units were completely engulfed in flames when they arrived at the facility just off Illinois Route 84 around 10:00pm on Monday, May 14th, 2012.

The fire caused crews to temporarily shut down Illinois Route 84 and hold up train traffic on a nearby rail line.

Thomson's Fire Chief says the quick response time of the other fire departments helped prevent the situation from getting worse.

"We have what they call a mutual aid box alarm system," says Gary Iben, Thomson Fire Chief. "We just call up to our dispatcher, say you want a box the second alarm and if you get here we keep moving up alarms and actually we were up to the fifth alarm on this box which I've never done before."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
