Former Macomb High School teacher Daniel Watson pleaded guilty to official misconduct after exchanging thousands of text messages with a 17-year-old student.

WIUM Radio reports Watson entered the plea as part of an agreement which will allow him to avoid the possibility of becoming a registered sex offender.

Watson was originally charged with two counts of official misconduct as well as one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Watson and the student had reportedly exchanged more than 6,000 text messages over a period of three months.

Watson will serve up to 150 days in jail followed by 30 months of probation.  His sentence also includes a $4,000 fine.
