Police say driver admitted to texting just before crash

Police said texting and driving was to blame for a crash that closed lanes of I-74 at Spruce Hills Drive.

UPDATE as of 10:00am, Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 -- Bettendorf Police say the name of the driver is Jennifer DeClerck, 24, of Moline.

Sgt. Rich Streepy says DeClerck was airlifted to Genesis East with several injuries and underwent surgery. She was out of surgery this morning and her prognosis is non-life-threatening.

Sgt. Streepy says DeClerck was wearing a seat belt when she lost control of her car, which probably saved her life.

Iowa's ban on texting while driving went into effect in Summer 2010. Police say DeClerck is subject to a $100 fine under that ban, but they're still trying to determine if they're actually going to file those charges since there were no other vehicles involved.

EARLIER STORY -- Police said texting and driving was to blame for a crash that closed lanes of I-74 at Spruce Hills Drive.

The car involved reportedly went into a ditch, struck the side of the on ramp, went airborne and hit a tree.

A crash involving injuries closed northbound lanes of Interstate 74 at Spruce Hills Drive Tuesday, May 15, 2012.

The crash was reported just before 3 p.m. at the top of the on ramp to northbound I-74. 

Police closed all northbound lanes, forcing drivers to exit at Spruce Hills Drive, to allow a helicopter ambulance to land near the crash scene.  Police later opened the left northbound lane, allowing traffic through but keeping the right lane closed north of Spruce Hills Drive. 

At one point, northbound I-74 traffic backed up to Middle Road.

All lanes were reopened by about 3:30 p.m.
