Just when we thought it couldn't get worse... it's getting a whole lot better.
Right in time for Memorial Day weekend, which kicks off the summer travel season, gas prices are going down.
According to the AAA Fuel Gauge, the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.75, down five cents from one week ago ($3.803) and down nearly 20 cents from last month ($3.927).
In the Illinois Quad Cities, the average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.817, so a little higher than the national average, but six cents lower than last week ($3.883) and 20 cents below the $4 mark, which was where gas in Illinois was one month ago in the Quad Cities ($4.005).
Across the river, the Iowa Quad Cities is more than 10 cents below the national average and is currently at $3.611 a gallon. Last week, it was at $3.648 and last month, it was at $3.786.
One reason why gas prices are falling is because crude oil prices are down nearly 10% in just the month of May. Analysts say drivers should pay an average of $3.79 a gallon at the pump through September, down 16 cents from last month's prediction, and only slightly higher than last summer's average of $3.71 a gallon.
