Diamond Pet Foods has recalled dry dog and cat foods sold under 11 different brand names due to potential Salmonella contamination.

More than a dozen people have reportedly been sickened with Salmonella after handling the pet food.  The illness has been reported in nine states:  Alabama (1), Connecticut (1), Michigan (1), Missouri (3), North Carolina (3), New Jersey (1), Ohio (2), Pennsylvania (1), and Virginia (1).

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the affected pet foods were manufactured in South Carolina.  Salmonella was detected in an unopened bag of Diamond Naturals dry dog food in early April 2012.  It was also found in an opened bag of Diamond brand pet food at the home of an ill person and in a sample collected by the FDA at the manufacturing plant.
