After four days of testimony both the state prosecutor and Kristin Holzman's defense lawyer rested their case late Thursday afternoon. Friday morning jurors will hear closing arguments from both sides before their deliberations. Thursday afternoon jurors saw a taped interview of Kristin Holzman from August 2nd, 2011. The interview was between Holzman, her attorney and Detective Sean Johnson of the Geneseo Police Department.
Ms. Holzman was given the opportunity to take the stand and testify Thursday but chose not too. Her lawyer called just one witness - a psychologist by the name of Dr. Kirk Witherspoon - who testified that Holzman has a loss of brain function, and didn't intend for this to go on as long as it did.
"I think it's more likely that no that that's the case. Mensa rya refers to one of two elements of any crime you have whatever you do and then you have your intention menus rya refers to the intention. And I think initially she did not have an intention at least a conscious planfull intention to go out and do this," said Dr. Witherspoon.
Earlier in the afternoon Detective Johnson testified Holzman was upset when the people of Geneseo, Illinois realized she did not have cancer.
"The thing that makes me irritated, like out of the $10,000 that was in the account these people that are complaining raised about $400 of it. WHITE FLASH I'm not trying to be rude or anything but it's just like they have no right - they have no right to tell me where this money should go because my bills were paid," Det. Johnson read Holzman's statements while on the witnesses stand.
A radiologist was also questioned at length Thursday morning saying in his opinion there was nothing in the 800+ pages of medical records that showed Holzman had any type of cancer or tumor on her brain stem.
The jury will return Friday morning to hear closing arguments from both sides and then begin their deliberations.
