DIXON – A newspaper article released in May of 2008 claims Mayor James Burke said “he’d like to find more detail about why the district hasn’t seen any money.”

The article from “The Telegraph” in Dixon brings out two different sides of town. Some think the mayor should have seen this coming.

“It was reported then that TIF money was missing,” former mayoral candidate Bob Gibler said. “Why didn’t anyone do an audit at that time? I don’t know.”

Current Mayor Jim Burke responded to the article Thursday. He says he never suspected any wrongdoings by his comptroller Rita Crundwell.

“If I had some evidence that she was taking the TIF money, absolutely I wouldn’t have hesitated a bit,” he said.

The article states that tax increment financing or TIF money hadn’t been adding up since 2004. Burke also claims Gibler’s speaking out to try to win the mayoral spot in 2015. That’s when Burke’s seat as mayor is up again.
