New controversial license plates may be hitting the roads of Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Transportation has approved the sale of “Choose Life" license plates.  The plates feature a drawing of two smiling children.

Iowa is now the 29th state to approve these plates.  The Iowa Right to Life Executive Director, Jenifer Bowen says the license plates are intended to be a non-confrontational statement about abortion.

“We are hopeful that maybe at the right time at the right moment, when someone is in a crisis moment it can be affirmation as well,” Bowen says.

The DOT issues dozens of specialty plates but this is the first involving an issue as sensitive as abortion.

The DOT rules state that proponents of the license plates have a year to obtain 500 applicants for the plates, which cost $25 in addition to regular fees.
