Ag in the AM: Farm Bill is Senate Bound

The 2012 Farm Bill is out of committee and heading to the full floor of the U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON, DC - The 2012 Farm Bill is out of committee and heading to the full floor of the U.S. Senate.

The 16-to-five vote in the Senate Agriculture Committee wasn't even close.

Included in the bill is the elimination of direct payments and an inclusion of risk management options intended to help farmers in times of crisis.   Southern farmers are still angry because it doesn't give the same income protections to cotton, peanut and rice farmers as corn and soybean farmers get.

The Senate Farm Bill is 900-pages long.

American Farm Bureau president Bob Stallman said that while the bill isn`t perfect, it is a step in the right direction.

The House is still working on its version of the Farm Bill.
