Ag in the AM: Southern Farmers Delay Farm Bill Progress

The Farm Bill is stalled in the U.S. Senate for now

WASHINGTON, DC - The Farm Bill is stalled in the U.S. Senate for now.

The dramatic turnaround occurred Tuesday night as the Senate Agriculture Committee abruptly announced it would postpone action scheduled for Wednesday.

At issue are Southern farmers who want better crop protection.

Corn, soybean, and cotton farmers are getting crop protection programs but Southern peanut and rice farmers are unhappy they are not included.   Dozens of Southern commodity groups weighed in this week with a letter asking for the postponement.

The delay shows just how difficult it's been to draft a new Farm Bill that could get congressional support.
