A new year marks a new type of trip for veterans in the Quad City area.

On Tuesday, April 24, 2012, the 18th Honor Flight of the Quad Cities took off from the Quad City International Airport to fly to Washington, D.C. The day-long trip will take veterans and their guardians to the monuments and memorials built in honor of their service.

This first Honor Flight of 2012 is different from most. A couple of Korean War Era veterans joined the World War II vets, as the Honor Flight Program expands its pool of applicants. May 22, 2012 will be the next Honor Flight and include 162 Korean War veterans and their guardians.

Since its start in 2008, the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities has brought 1,700 World War II veterans to the nation's capital. Many hubs around the country are dwindling because they're running out of World War II veterans to take on the trip, but the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities decided to open up its program to Korean War era veterans. More than 300 have already applied and to be eligible, a veteran did not have to serve in Korea, just during that time period.
