Davenport Police say a man they arrested twice in four days turned a possible speeding ticket into a felony charge of assault on a police officer.
Yusuf Hasan Shariff, 55, was released from jail Sunday, April 15, 2012 after being arrested two days prior on a misdemeanor theft charge.
Then Tuesday morning, April 17, police said they tried to stop a car that was allegedly speeding southbound on Marquette Street just before 7 a.m.
By the time the officer got turned around to try to make the traffic stop, the car had reportedly crashed into a landscaping wall on the east side of Genesis West in the 2400 block of Marquette Street. The vehicle was reportedly driven by Mr. Shariff.
As the police officer tried to detain him, Shariff allegedly spun around and punched the officer in the face.
The two men struggled, and a second police officer arrived. Shariff allegedly pulled a knife from the belt of the second officer and tried to stab both officers.
One of the officers reportedly suffered a cut to a finger as they got control of Shariff and took away the knife.
Shariff was charged with felony assault on a police officer, felony disarming a police officer, as well as misdemeanor counts of failing to maintain control, interference with official acts and speeding.
Shariff was held in the Scott County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.
