People in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan reported seeing a meteor fireball in the sky Wednesday night, April 11, 2012.

The National Weather Service office on Romeoville confirms they received these reports of a green meteor fireball visible in the sky just before 8:30 p.m. Central time.

People in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and in Wheaton, Oswego, Naperville, Chicago and Northbrook, Illinois were among those reporting the fireball visible in the eastern sky.

No one reported any sounds connected to the sightings.

The NWS confirmed the sky was clear and that they received calls, but they did not confirm whether a meteor might have caused the lights reported streaming across the night sky.

A website dedicated to tracking meteor sightings, lunarmeteoritehunters.com, says a “large green meteor fireball” occurred.

Several News 8 viewers reported seeing something in the sky Wednesday evening around 8:30 or 9 p.m.

“Traveling from west to northeast,” one viewer told us.

Another reported seeing it at about 8:20 p.m. as they left the HyVee on 23rd Avenue in Moline, saying it was moving fast and “going north, with a long comet-like tail.”
